The Greek Newspaper Real News features the «Nisyros Dialogues 2024»: Insularity in Focus

The leading role of the Greek remote islands in the geopolitical and sustainable development of the Eastern Mediterranean is the central theme of this year's «Nisyros Dialogues»

The central theme of this year's «Nisyros Dialogues» is the leading role of the Greek remote islands in the geopolitics and sustainable development of the Eastern Mediterranean. The forum, organized by the «Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation - Sustainability of Nisyros» AMKE, will take place from July 4 to 7 in Nisyros, the remote island of the Dodecanese.

This year's agenda of the «Dialogues» places particular emphasis on the implementation of the ambitious transformative framework of the 2030 Agenda, specifically focusing on developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the sustainability of insularity in the face of contemporary challenges. Top government officials, such as Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis and Minister of Digital Governance, Dimitris Papastergiou, representatives of the opposition, including newly elected PASOK MEP, Yiannis Maniatis and SYRIZA Political Militant Dionysis Temponeras, as well as distinguished academics such as Professor Christos Zerefos and the Rector of NTUA, Ioannis Chatzigeorgiou, will be in attendance.

As Panagiotis G. Mihalos, President of the «Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation» stated to Real: "Our goal is to reposition Greek insularity in the public dialogue and promote actionable ideas and solutions on issues of geopolitics, energy, sustainable development, and insularity, with a central focus on the protection and promotion of the natural and cultural heritage of remote areas. This is why we organize the «Dialogues» in Nisyros, a small and remote island that stands out because it is an active volcano with rare biodiversity and pristine beauty, serving as a reference point on the map of the Southeastern Mediterranean".

The objective of the «Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation» is to highlight and protect the distinctive and unique characteristics of Greece's remote areas. To this end, it seeks strategic partnerships with esteemed institutions from the fields of Science, Education, and Civil Society, such as SPAY, the National Technical University of Athens, N.E.C.C.A, and the Doha Forum.

A few days ago, within the framework of the memorandum of cooperation signed between the «Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation» and SPAY for the creation of Inter-Island Trail Networks, the two organizations created the «Nisyros Dialogues - Georgios M. Mihalos Foundation Trail» on Mount Hymettus. The goal of this initiative is to symbolically connect the mountain of Attica with Nisyros island, bringing the residents of Attica closer to the local elements and the nature of remote insularity. A similar initiative will take place on the island of Nisyros during the 2024 «Dialogues».
