Professor, at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Director of the Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachines. He holds a Mechanical engineering Degree (1980) from NTUA, a Diploma from the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (1981) and a Doctorate in Applied Sciences (1985) from the Κatholiκ University of Leuven, in Belgium.
He has been teaching since 1990 subjects related to energy conversion and aircraft propulsion and performed research in areas such as modelling and operation of power stations and gas turbines, pollutants and noise emissions. He has had the responsibility of the implementation and management of many research projects, though which he has developed partnerships with companies and organizations in Greece, Europe and worldwide, in the fields of energy and propulsion. Among them all the major European air-engine manufacturers (e.g. SAFRAN, Rolls Royce, MTU), the most recent collaborations being with AIRBUS and South Korean DOOSAN Heavy Industries.
He has served as Secretary General for Energy and Climate Change in the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change from December 2009 till March 2015. From this position he has played an active role in the reforms that took place in the Greek energy market over that period.
His research activity has led to more than 200 publications in international scientific journals and conferences. His publications have been repeatedly distinguished with best paper awards, and he has been awarded the annual distinction by the Controls and Diagnostics Committee of the American Association of Mechanical Engineers (IGTI/ASME) in 2002.
