Paraskevi (Evi) Nomikou
She has participated in more than 80 Greek and international oceanographic
expeditions focusing on submarine mapping and the study of marine
geohazards (submarine eruptions, faults, earthquakes, tsunamis, and
landslides). Most recently, she played a leading role in assessing
potential marine geohazards associated with tectono-magmatic activity
northeast of the
Santorini volcano (February 2025). She explores the seafloor using
innovative marine technologies, including autonomous underwater vehicles
(AUVs) and robotic systems, and shares her expertise with students through
her university teaching. She serves as an inspiring role model for young
women aspiring to pursue careers in oceanography.
Her extensive research activity at both national and international levels
is reflected in her substantial and high-impact publication record, as
well as in her consistent participation in international conferences in
Greece and abroad.
In recognition of her expertise in the study of submarine volcanic
morphology and tectonic structures, she was awarded the Fisher Medal Award
2025 by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the
Earth's Interior.
In addition, she has been appointed as a new member of the Sub-Committee
on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) of the General Bathymetric Chart of the
Oceans international program.
