Nisyros Dialogues: Sustainable development and tourism with respect for our islands

Publication Date: 08 July 2025

In the Nisyros dialogues on the sustainability of our islands and tourism:

  • Spatial tourism planning connected to carrying capacity, island resilience, infrastructure, and the protection of the environment and aesthetic landscape
  • water management through desalination, modernization of water supply networks, and quaternary wastewater treatment
  • energy autonomy based on a special spatial plan for RES and marine spatial planning for offshore wind farms
  • waste management with Processing and Recycling Units that will replace incineration and landfill, utilizing biodegradable waste for biogas energy production

Tourism is not a threat to our country. It needs rules, infrastructure, value instead of volume, decentralization and, most importantly, real benefits for the local communities that bear its burden.
